Dr. Adesegun A. Akin-Olugbade

Dr. Adesegun A. Akin-Olugbade, who was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees at AFAP, is a distinguished legal and financial expert with over three decades of experience. He embarked on his remarkable journey by earning an LL.B. (Honours) Degree from King’s College London and being admitted to the Nigerian Bar as a Solicitor & Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. During his practice diploma, he received accolades such as the Judge Taslim Elias Prize for Best Overall Student and the 1st Prize in Law of Evidence.

Driven by a passion for knowledge, he pursued further studies, earning an LL.M. degree in International Finance and Corporate Law from King’s College London. His academic pursuits culminated in a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) degree from Harvard Law School, where he conducted pioneering research on region-wide banking feasibility in West Africa.

Dr. Akin-Olugbade’s professional journey began as a State Counsel at the Federal Ministry of Justice in Lagos, Nigeria, where he honed his legal skills. He later joined Arnold & Porter as a Foreign Associate, gaining expertise in sovereign debt restructuring during the Sovereign Debt Crisis in Latin America and Africa.

Returning to Africa, he joined the African Development Bank (AfDB) as Senior Counsel, providing legal guidance for international capital market operations and investments. He subsequently became the General Counsel of the AfDB and guided the legal aspects of AfDB’s governance reforms and the unprecedented relocation from Abidjan to Tunis. Prior to becoming general counsel of the AfDB, his career took him to the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), where he served as Chief Legal Officer, overseeing legal functions and structuring innovative finance products.

His leadership journey continued at Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), where he held pivotal roles, including Executive Director (Chief Operating Officer) and General Counsel. He provided oversight for various divisions, advised boards and management, and contributed significantly to AFC’s operations.

In 2019, Dr. Akin-Olugbade founded LUWAJI Nominees, offering Company Secretarial, Regulatory Compliance and Advisory Services. He also serves as Of Counsel at Clifford Chance and as an International Counsel at Aelex. His dedication to scholarship, leadership, and expertise has positioned him as a distinguished authority in the legal and financial sectors, making him a valuable addition to the Board of Trustees at AFAP.
