James Savage

Board Member

James Savage is a seasoned legal and international development professional with a wealth of experience as a lawyer and senior policy advisor. As a Member of the Board of Trustees at the African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP), James brings his expertise in  governance, compliance, and economic development to this important role.

For more than eight years, James has served as Senior Counsel at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), where he helps shape enforcement policy and strategy. In this role, James has demonstrated his commitment to protecting consumers and providing fair oversight of the consumer financial sector.

Prior to joining the CFPB, James was General Counsel and Operations Coordinator at AFAP, where he contributed to the organization’s startup and growth. He also spearheaded international economic development initiatives as a principal at i-Partner Group for clients including the African Development Bank, AGRA and COMESA/ACTESA.

James’s legal career includes service as Assistant Attorney General in Charge of Consumer Protection at the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. Prior entering public service, James practiced complex commercial litigation at law firms including Skadden Arps and Scarpone, Staiano & Savage.

James holds a Juris Doctor degree, summa cum laude, from Seton Hall University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Economics from Bowdoin College.

Throughout his career, James Savage has consistently demonstrated his dedication to public service, legal expertise and international development. His role as a Trustee at AFAP underscores his passion for advancing agriculture and agribusiness across Africa and contributing to sustainable economic growth and prosperity for all.
