AFAP Poised for Enhanced Impact with Strategic Restructuring
The Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism (AFAP) is embarking on a transformative journey designed to amplify its impact and effectiveness across the continent. Beyond navigating current changes in the donor environment and financial challenges, AFAP is proactively shaping a future characterized by resilience, adaptability, and increased influence in supporting agricultural development.
A key pillar of this strategic direction is the decentralization of AFAP’s operations. The organization will transition into a regional structure, divided into three distinct zones: East, West, and Southern Africa. This restructuring empowers local teams to more effectively address the unique needs and challenges within their specific regions.
This significant shift will be spearheaded by the appointment of dedicated Regional Heads:
- West Africa: Nana-Aisha Mohammed will lead the West Africa region from the Ghana office, overseeing operations in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Mali.
- East Africa: James Mutonyi has been appointed Regional Head of East Africa, with the regional headquarters in Kenya, and will oversee the Uganda and Tanzania offices.
- Southern Africa: Sergio Ussaca will assume the role of Regional Head of Southern Africa, based in Mozambique, and will oversee the Malawi, South Africa, and Zambia offices.
This move towards regional autonomy will not only streamline operational efficiency but also cultivate a stronger sense of ownership and accountability at the regional level, ensuring that AFAP’s interventions are tailored and responsive.
In addition to this regional restructuring, AFAP has made key appointments to strengthen its central operations. Sandra Pires has been appointed as the Head of Corporate Affairs. In this role, Pires will oversee the business operations and administration of AFAP activities as corporate services. The Johannesburg office will continue to provide crucial support services to the field offices, and South Africa will commence its first round of projects with partners such as GIZ.
To further bolster AFAP’s growth and sustainability, the organization will appoint a Business Development Specialist. This role will support Joseph Mwangangi, Interim CEO, in cultivating new business opportunities and diversifying AFAP’s funding sources, ensuring the organization’s continued capacity to deliver impactful programs.
