AFAP recently hosted a project orientation workshop at the Radisson Park Inn Hotel in Westlands, Kenya. This gathering brought together key stakeholders pivotal to the implementation of the Sustain Africa – Kenya Project including Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR-EIA), President Economic Transformation Secretariat (PETS) and Ministry of Agriculture (MOA).

The workshop’s primary objective was to understand and clarify the roles of each partner organization that will be involved in the implementation of  Sustain Africa – Kenya Project. The outlined objectives for the meeting included an overview of AFAP, insights into the Sustain Africa Initiative, and a meticulous examination of the Sustain Africa – Kenya Project.

James Mutonyi, AFAP Kenya Country Director, served as the workshop moderator and underscored the significance of understanding the intricacies of the Sustain Africa and how it would apply to Kenya. James gave a thorough rundown of the project, outlining its goals, scheduled tasks, deliverables, and the team in charge of carrying them out. The first project under the Sustain Africa will be titled ‘Kenya Access and Nutrient Use,’ and will run from September 2023 to August 2024. Its components include capacity building, monitoring evaluation, fertilizer advice, and government advisory.

Mandla Nkomo, Chief Growth Officer of CGIAR-EIA, explained the role of CGIAR-EIA and highlighted the value of the Agwise model, an advanced data analytics framework to develop agronomic recommendations. A demonstration showcased Agwise’s versatility with various modules.

Henry Kinyua, Advisor-Crops & Value Chains at PETS, discussed PETS’ role in overcoming obstacles and supporting implementation bodies. PETS contributes to agricultural fundamentals such as food security, import reduction, export growth, increased farmer income, and job creation.

In conclusion, the workshop was a crucial step toward the Sustain Africa – Kenya Project’s effective execution. It promoted cooperation and strategic planning among various stakeholders, creating a solid groundwork for the forthcoming transformational endeavors.
