Promoting the use of cheaper fertilizer alternatives for smallholder farmers

28 Jul 2023

Recently, AFAP in partnership with USAID Trade Boost exhibited and participated at the 2023 Zambia AGRITECH Agriculture Expo in Chisamba. This provided a platform for AFAP to promote the benefits of Crystalline Ammonium Sulphate (CASO4) as a cheaper alternative to Urea 46%N fertilizer there by driving demand creation for the CASO4.

Following the Expo, AFAP conducted ‘farmer harvest days’ in Shibuyunji Central Region, Shimabala Lusaka region, Chikankata and Magoye Southern Regions which saw more than 500 farmers in attendance.

“Our demo plots provided compelling evidence of the superior performance of the CASO4 fertilizer compared to areas where Urea was applied. This demonstration greatly facilitated the training session for smallholder farmers in attendance, making it easier for them to grasp the benefits and potential of using CASO4 to enhance their agricultural practices”, said Gene Phiri, Zambia Country Manager, AFAP.

As AFAP continues its efforts to drive demand creation for CASO4, it remains committed to advancing soil health and resilience in the face of climate change, ensuring a brighter and more prosperous future for African agriculture.
