Farmers in Barue District Embrace Better Farming Techniques

21 Mar 2025

The African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP) and its partners—Omnia, Seed Co, Phoenix Seeds, and Valley Seeds—recently hosted a field day in the heart of Barue District, Manica Province. The event focused on empowering smallholder farmers with the skills and resources to increase their productivity.

From early morning, 98 participants filled the demonstration fields, eager to learn. Notably, 47% were women and 41% were youth, a clear sign that the next generation of agricultural leaders is stepping up.

Farmers participated in hands-on training and live demonstrations, learning how to improve yields through better fertilizer application, the benefits of hybrid seeds, and how to manage pests and diseases. Seeing the real-time results of these techniques sparked excitement and curiosity among attendees.

The District Director of SDAE, the guest speaker, emphasized the need to strengthen market linkages. “Farmers must have access to reliable markets,” he said, encouraging agro-dealers to play a central role in connecting producers with buyers.

The impact of these events is that they build stronger and more connected agricultural communities where farmers not just grow crops but also grow their futures.

These activities were successfully executed by African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP) in Mozambique under the Fertilizer Financing for Sustainable Agriculture Management (FFSAM) project, an initiative of the African Fertilizer Financing Mechanism (AFFM) of the African Development Bank Group, and funded by NORAD.
